Moora – Culture and History
The area was first explored by George Fletcher Moore who named the Moore River in 1836.
The settlement of the area occurred in the 1840s but there was no need for a township.
As late as 1873, when the telegraph passed through the area, the operator was a member of the family at Berkshire Valley.
The town eventually grew up on the banks of the river and was officially gazetted on 12 April 1895.
It was named after some sort of corruption of ‘Maura’ which was said to be the name local Aborigines gave to a well to the west of the town.
10th Anniversary of the Moora Flood
Saturday 21st March 2009
It is ten years since the devastating floods hit Moora in the early hours of 21st March 1999. Since then Moora has made a remarkable recovery and grown and prospered. We have many reasons to be thankful and proud of our town. Some of Moora’s achievements over the last ten years are:
- First Class Hospital
- Brand new C.Y.O’Connor T.A.F.E. building
- Moora Performing Arts Centre
- Landscaped parks and streets
- Many new buildings and houses worth millions of dollars
- Won the Australian Community of the Year in 2000
The Moora Chamber of Commerce and the Shire of Moora have joined forces to promote Moora in a positive light and we hope you will join in the celebrations we have planned.
Over the weekend there will be a free photographic and video exhibition at the Moora Community Recreation Centre with photos of Moora before, during and after the floods.
It is hoped people and organisations who helped us during and after the floods will return to Moora to see how far we have come since those fateful days in March ten years ago.
Free bus town tours for locals and visitors to see how Moora has improved with its parks, gardens and new buildings.
